At that point, the refrigerant will reach a temperature between 120 and 140 degrees. That’s hotter than the outdoor air in almost all cases. When the hot refrigerant passes through the outdoor heat exchanger, it readily releases heat.

A heat pump does the same thing in heating mode but in the opposite direction. It sends low-pressure cold refrigerant through the outdoor heat exchanger. The refrigerant can be as cold as -15 degrees, depending on the heat pump. As a result, the refrigerant absorbs heat from the outside air. Then, the warmed refrigerant passes through the compressor, getting hot enough to heat your home.
